BarberKu is one of the many unique barbershop found in Brunei. Managed by a group of friends, Abdul Mateen, Mohd Khairulddin, Mohd Shahrol and Abdul Rauf. They started their journey in January 2020 when they attended a male hair cutting course held by Pusat Pembangunan Belia(Youth Development Centre) also trained by Jae Ahmadkhan of Chaps & Rebels with the duration of 3 months. However it was postponed due to the ongoing pandemic until July when they received their certificates.
After the completion of their course and training, they were approached by Kementerian Budaya Belia dan Sukan(Ministry of Youth Culture and Sports) with the proposal of opening their own barbershop and the four of them as the owners. An opportunity where they unanimously accepted as they all realized the difficulty of getting a job considering the current situation caused by the pandemic. This shows how the Brunei government offers a wide variety of course that aims to develop youths in Brunei.
With support from KKBS, they opened up their barbershop at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium and called their shop BarberKu. The support from KKBS also includes financial as it allows them to buy all the necessary equipment needed for their shop. They opened for business is September 2020 until now but not without a few minor setbacks caused by the 2nd wave of the pandemic in Brunei.
The services they provide is as similar to other barbershops across Brunei(haircut, shave hair wash and hot towel) however they strive to ensure that customer experience is high by providing suggestions as to what haircuts suits their customers or by explaining products that can improve their hair. The training they had really shows when they are cutting hairs as every step they take it meticulous and pair with great equipment, speaking from experience, it was great.
As of today(18/12/2021) they have reopened due to Brunei entering the "Endemic" stage where we can enter premises, they are now open for walk ins. For more information on BarberKu you can visit their Instagram page at @barberku.bn
